Wyck Godfrey Talks About Kristen as Vampire Bella and Confirms BD 2 will Not be in 3D
What would you say fans can look forward to, with Part 2 of Breaking Dawn?
GODFREY: To me, the second part is all about the new vampires. Bella becomes a vampire. That’s what we’ve all been waiting for. That aspect of the second film is going to blow people away. Kristen [Stewart] so owns a new character, when she becomes this other creature.
What was it that ultimately made the final decision not to do either of these films in 3D?
GODFREY: Honestly, certainly Movie 1 did not feel like a movie that should be shot in 3D. It didn’t feel like it was a visual journey. It was an emotional journey. It was a character story. We felt like it would be cynical to shoot it in 3D ‘cause, at the time, everyone was thinking, “Oh, everything should be done in 3D because we’ll get higher ticket prices.” We all said, “Time out. This movie should not be shot in 3D.” If anything, we would have said, “Well, maybe the second movie could be shot in 3D,” but you literally can’t shoot a 3D movie and a non-3D movie, at the same time, when you’re going back and forth between Movie 1 and Movie 2. So, we just said, “You know what? The movies have always worked without being in 3D. They’ll continue to work without being in 3D.”

Wyck Godfrey talks ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 1′ with ‘Syfy Magazine’

In the December issue of Syfy Magazine (hitting stores now, with The Walking Dead featured on the cover), Wyck Godfrey (producer on The Twilight Saga) talked a bit about how and fellow filmmakers decided upon hiring Bill Condon to direct The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2.
Explaining first how each of the previous directors matched up with their respective projects, Godfrey explained why he thought the final two were a good match for Condon.
“With Breaking Dawn, it’s a journey into adulthood. It’s a very mature step for Edward and Bella, moving into marriage and sex for the first time, pregnancy, birth. All of that really speaks to finding a filmmaker who could help our young actors, who hadn’t gone through any of that stuff … go through that process. Bill’s work has always come from a place of maturity, I found … He’s always directed films about misunderstood outsiders. And I feel that Edward and Bella are misunderstood outsiders, in terms of what they want. And Condon’s work also has some visual scale to it. Dreamgirls showed that he could direct a movie that had a really beautiful visual style to it.”
Godfrey also admitted that the Twilight fan community has been influential in more ways than one and re-iterated the point Bill Condon made at Comic-Con this summer, that fan blogs and opinions coming off of watching things from afar led to a few on-set changes during production.
“The first day of shooting in Brazil, Rob and Kristen’s pictures got taken everywhere. And overwhelmingly the response was, ‘Oh my gosh! His hair is too dark! His hair is black! What did they do? His hair is too black!’ And it literally forced us to go in the next day and look at him and go, ‘Did we go too dark with his hair? Should we lighten it a little bit?’ And I think we ended up lightening it . . . Also, you’ve read all the blogs about the books by the time you’re making the movies. So, in some way all that is subconsciously affecting your decisions as you’re working on the adaptations of the scripts. I know that numerous times we’ll be in a room talking about the script and someone will go, ‘No, No! That’s one fo the fans’ favorite scenes! WE have to do that!’”

Finally! Someone is answering our most burning questions about “The Twilight Saga”‘s two-part finale, “Breaking Dawn.” Producer Wyck Godfrey recently sat down with USA Today to address fan queries, including where the two films will split, how the honeymoon scene will stick to a PG-13 rating (ooh la la!) and the logistics of the grisly birthing scene.
We’ve long suspected “Breaking Dawn: Part 1″‘s closing moments would revolve around Bella’s transformation into a vampire—whether hinting at what was to come or showing an actual bloodsucking glimpse. Well, Wyck has confirmed our suspicions saying, “We basically want to take the audience through the emotional part of Bella’s journey as she becomes a vampire. The first part will cover the wedding, the honeymoon and the birth.” The first film will end right before Bella turns (meaning director Bill Condon might be able use some of our closing scene suggestions!).
But let’s be honest, we can quibble and speculate all we want about the films’ dividing point, but what we really want to hear about is Bella, Edward and all those feathers. Wyck was quick to emphasize that “Breaking Dawn”‘s Isle Esme sex scene will NOT be something worthy of Skinemax. “It does not become soft porn,” he said. “It is a legitimate and important part of the movie, romantic and sensual.” And really, that’s what we’ve always loved about “Twilight”—the romance. Though we’ll admit the “sensual” part is getting us pretty excited, too.
As creative and complex as the honeymoon scene will likely be, it sounds as though even more thought has been put into tastefully portraying the movie’s graphic birthing scene, in which Edward literally bites their baby out of Bella’s womb. Shudder. Thankfully, the film’s masterminds have devised an ingenious solution: It will be seen through Bella’s eyes. “She is looking through the haze, experiencing pain and everything rushing around her,” Wyck explained. “We only see what she sees.” In my mind, I’m envisioning something similar to Bella’s vampire venom-induced hallucinations from “Twilight.” Now, if only Robert Pattinson could be the soundtrack to this painful moment!

Wyck Godfrey Talks ‘Breaking Dawn’ with USA Today – Update from Baton Rouge *Spoilers*
Speaking from the Baton Rouge set where both installments of Breaking Dawn are shooting simultaneously, Wyck answered some of the Twi-faithful’s more pressing questions.
Q: Where does the story split in half?
A: “We basically want to take the audience through the emotional part of Bella’s journey as she becomes a vampire. The first part will cover the wedding, the honeymoon and the birth.” The film ends just before she embarks on her supernatural transformation.
Q: The book has three segments, two of which present Bella’s point of view and a middle that’s devoted to the perspective of her rejected werewolf suitor, Jacob (Taylor Lautner). How is that handled?
A: “The story will break from her and follow Jacob throughout the course of the movie as he struggles with his own dilemma. There is a sense that as Bella and the Cullens (Edward’s makeshift vampire clan) deal with her pregnancy, the world is still turning outside with Jacob.”
Q: Why was Bill Condon, the Oscar-winning filmmaker best known for his musicals as the screenwriter of 2002′s Chicagoand the director of 2006′s Dreamgirls, selected as the director of the finale?
A: “These films have the most difficult stuff from a performance standpoint. With his history of directing, I can’t think of anyone who would be better at bringing out the best in an actor.” Plus, the director, who did the 1995 sequel to Candyman, is a fright-fare enthusiast. “He has an appetite for the genre and a passion for the Twilight books and movies.”
Q: Considering what goes on during the torturous birth process, how can the rating be PG-13?
A: With Twilight’s core of under-18 fans, “it would be a crime against our audience to go R-rated.” However, “this is based on a much more mature book. We need to progress and be more sophisticated.” A compromise: Having the bloody, bone-crushing delivery be seen only through Bella’s eyes. “She is looking through the haze, experiencing pain and everything rushing around her. We only see what she sees.”
Q: How is the long-awaited consummation of Edward and Bella’s love portrayed?
A: Even though their physical relationship goes way beyond what was shown in the first three films, “it does not become soft porn. It is a legitimate and important part of the movie, romantic and sensual.”
Q: At the end of Breaking Dawn, about 70 or so vampires from around the world gather to face off with the Cullens and their allies plus Jacob’s wolf pack. How can you keep both portions of the storytelling equally compelling?
A: “The second half is more of an action film in terms of life-and-death stakes.” But the domestic moments of the first film possess an emotional punch. “There are the pangs of newlywed tension that occur that are relatable even in a fantasy film. Marriage is not quite the experience that they thought it was.”
Q: Is there any chance that Condon could sneak in a musical number?
A: There might be traditional dancing at the wedding. But don’t expect any of the wolf pack to suddenly howl a tune or do a soft-shoe shuffle.
Although, as Godfrey jokes, “We just had a whole line of actors marching toward the camera. We could have them practice a chorus line with vampires doing kicks.”

While some producers dream about winning big on one certified box office bonanza, producer Wyck Godfrey has hit the jackpot with two: a little movie called Twilight and its follow-up New Moon. More than $1 billion in box office totals later, Godfrey is back with the third installment of the vampire love saga, Eclipse, which opens on Wednesday. The hoopla will continue through the final book in the Stephenie Meyer series, Breaking Dawn, which has been split into two movies, the first scheduled for November 2011. Godfrey talked to TIME about shirtless werewolves and the real-world effects of vampire-human relationships.
